The Street of the City (Hill, GL, 1942)

After Bonnie came to ask Lady Winthrop for help, she sent a thermos of chicken soup and another of coffee. She prepared chicken sandwiches, added milk, a loaf of bread, some butter and oranges for Val to take to the little family.
Former neighbors brought their furniture and raisin cookies, but wouldn't stay for dinner. They enjoyed broiled chops, creamed potatoes, spinach , peas, applesauce and custard pie that Lady Winthrop brought in a basket.
The nurse stayed busy making oatmeal and meat, barley and vegetable soup, apple pie and cheese. She made baked beans, salad and custard pie the night Marietta came to bother Frannie.

After cleaning up the dinner dishes, they prepared for breakfast. That would certainly help a busy family get out the door in the morning.
