Beauty for Ashes (Hill, GL, 1935)
This is one of my favorite stories because of the close relationship between Gloria and her father.
Right before her wedding, Gloria's fiance is found dead in embarrassing circumstances. Her dad takes her back to his hometown for a visit to take her mind off of it. On the way, they stop for lunch at a little cottage advertising homemade bread sandwiches- fried egg or chicken, and milk to drink.
When they arrived at her dad's childhood home, there was stewed chicken on biscuits with gravy, mashed potatoes, succotash, currant jelly, homegrown celery and pickles. For dessert, baked Indian pudding. More later. . .
