Through These Fires (Hill, GL, 1943)

Lexie was closing up her mother's house before returning to college. She was about to eat a simple lunch of scrambled eggs, bread and butter and milk when a telegram came that changed all her plans.
On the night of their surprise arrival, Lexie was able to persuade the children to try a spinach omelet, potatoes, cookies and a pear apiece.
When Cinda arrived, they enjoyed biscuits and honey, and later corn-meal muffins, soft-boiled eggs and applesauce.
