The Obsession of Victoria Gracen (Hill, GL, 1927) This book has so many great details, it will take a while to describe, so this is Part 1.
Richard reluctantly agreed to come visit his Aunt Victoria after the death of his mother. He was able to pay off debts with money she forwarded and ate breakfast at the station restaurant. He ordered beefsteak, fried potatoes, buckwheat cakes with maple syrup and a glass of cream.
After a warm welcome at Aunt Victoria's house they had lunch. There was stewed chicken and gravy over little biscuits, more biscuits with raspberry jam and currant jelly, succotash made with corn and calico beans, pickles, mashed potatoes and a glass of milk. As if that wasn't enough, dessert was floating-island in custard and maple cake.
At bedtime, Victoria came in to kiss him goodnight and whispered this prayer:
"Oh my heavenly Father, I thank Thee for sending me this dear boy. Bless him; and make him happy and good in this new home; and show me how to love and help him every day; and may we be a blessing to each other, for Jesus' sake. Amen."
Could that be more precious? I prayed the same for my son this afternoon.
