The Obsession of Victoria Gracen (Hill, GL, 1927) Part 3

Victoria had get-togethers for her boys especially on Sunday afternoons.  They would read-aloud, sing and pray.  She served lots of snacks: molasses candy, her famous brown and white bread sandwiches, hot chocolate with whipped cream and little sponge cakes.  Another day there were little tarts, crisp cookies, salad and broths with toasted wafers.  They also enjoyed suppers of chicken and pies enough for a regiment.
On one such afternoon, they studied the nineteenth chapter of John.  When they arrived at the Sunday evening service, the same text was used during the sermon.  "Does anything just happen in this God's world of ours?" (page 130)  Almost daily, I learn, no!  Often, something I've read during the week will be mentioned in a sermon, or tv or another friend's blog with a different thought or emphasis.
Another cozy description is of the minister coming home from a funeral on a snowy afternoon.  His wife brought him a cup of tea, buttered toast and a soft-boiled egg.

And now, more vacation pictures.  Today, the Grand Canyon South Rim.  It's enormity and amazingness (a real word?) and sheer difference from what I see on a daily basis reminds me of the second verse of my favorite hymn.
Summer and winter, and springtime and harvest,
Sun, moon and stars in their courses above,
Join with all nature in manifold witness
to Thy great faithfulness, mercy and love.
